Musical Journeys Around Town

November 18, 2014

In the past month, some of the big kids and I have had an opportunity to go on two wonderful field trips, where we made new friends and had new experiences.

Come take a little journey with me as I recap some highlights from our recent adventures…

First stop, we visited our friend Kwasi at African Arts and Drums near W Broadway and Columbia St.

We were welcomed with a big smile and a colourful world of masks, art, drums, shakers and instruments of all kinds.

There was nothing in the store that the kids couldn’t try, and they had such a blast drumming on big djembe drums and trying all sorts of different percussion instruments.  Kwasi even taught us some songs and had the kids marching around the store.  I think this newly formed band has a lot of promise!

Thanks Kwasi for your open heart, warm smile and for giving us a little glimpse into the world of African music!

Next stop, Gandharva Loka – The World Music Store on Granville Island!

With some of the most magical, diverse and healing instruments from around the world, this was our first glimpse of the store…

We had to be extra careful with some of these delicate and precious instruments, but the staff were all extremely gracious in letting the kids try different instruments.  The kids got to try drums, percussion instruments, shakers that make a baaaa sound when you shake them and the best part was that they got to stand in gigantic Tibetan singing bowls while the staff rang them.  This allowed them to experience the sound vibration with their whole bodies.  What an experience!

I am so grateful to both African Arts and Drums and Gandharva Loka for their generosity and for welcoming us into a world of magic, fun and possibility.  The kids had a blast and were talking about their experiences long after they were over.  Thanks to all our new friends for guiding us on these adventures!

Stay tuned to find out where our next adventure takes us…
