Kids We Love: Nalani and Sebastian, two peas in a pod!
We have lots of sibling pairs at Buddings. Usually, there’s an older child, with some experience, and then a younger one, trailing behind. That’s the way I remember my big sister, too. One of the sweetest pair of siblings are Nalani and Sebastian, but these fraternal twins started at Buddings on the same day.
On their first day, I learned that Nalani loves “meows” (cats). Armed with this knowledge, I scrounged around for our cat-shaped cookie cutter and invited her to play.
“Why don’t you come to the play dough table? We can make you a meow!”
She wants to… but not quite ready to make the move. Standing in the middle of the room, she and her brother are holding hands. The two of them are huddled together, hand-in-hand, their shoulders pressing against each other’s. Sebastian looks from me to his sister quietly. Then, saying nothing, he nudges Nalani in my direction.
Nalani, reassured by Sebastian, agrees. She lets go of his hand and takes a seat next to me. Sebastian seats himself next to his sister dutifully and begins to roll out some play dough without any instruction. “Shall we make your sister a kitty?” I ask. I offer him the cookie cutter I had dug out of the tray of play dough tools.
I see a ghost of a smile on Sebastian’s lips as he reaches for the cookie cutter. Still saying nothing, he presses it into the play dough and triumphantly presents his sister with a “meow”. Her face lights up instantly and Sebastian smiles a little wider.
These two will play independently, sometimes, but even when they do, they keep a close eye on each other. They will explore new games and make new friends, but the bond they already share is something I, as a non-twin, can only wonder at.
