Introducing… World Stories and Food
It’s a great big world out there, and there’s so much to explore!
Every Tuesday afternoon, from 1 – 4pm, some of the bigger kids and I will be tasting little pieces of what’s out there (no pun intended) through two of the most ancient ways humans connect – food and stories.
We’ll travel all over the world, by plane, by boat, and dragon, to celebrate the diversity of our planet and its vibrant cultures, and ultimately, to celebrate the universal human heart that connects us all.
The program will begin Tuesday, October 7, so make sure to book your child in on Tuesday afternoon to find out where our first adventure will take us!
Introducing: Johanna Peters, avid adventurist and life enthusiast

Having experienced the richness of travel and diversity of human culture myself, I am very excited to have the opportunity to explore some of this richness with the kids at Buddings. I love learning about other cultures and immersing myself in new and unfamiliar worlds. I usually discover that these unfamiliar worlds are not so strange after all, and they always have a lot to teach me about myself.
My love of drama, music and yoga will inevitably influence how we explore these different world stories, and I am excited to use sound, movement, touch, smell, taste and sight to make worlds come alive for myself and the kids. I would also love to connect the kids to their own cultural roots and to learn about cultural foods and rituals that are still alive in your families, so please please please share them with me so the kids own contexts can influence where we move on our journey.
Feel free to share experiences, stories or ideas with me, and to ask me anything. You can email me at johanna@buddings.ca.
What is the program all about?
Tuesday’s World Stories and Food Program will primarily use the avenues of storytelling and food to explore world cultures. We will look at myths, legends and folktales from around the world that give us insights into that culture’s beliefs and ways of life. The beauty of stories, especially for children, is that they teach us about the world and ourselves without having to talk about it an explicit way. The lessons are told implicitly and brought to life through the story.
One resource that will be used a lot throughout the program is The Barefoot Book of Earth Tales, a compilation of stories from around the world, all of which teach us an important lesson about our relationship to each other and to the earth.
In order to enhance the program and to dive deeper into certain cultures, there will be opportunities to leave the daycare on field trips to cultural centres, shops, and maybe even restaurants. There will also be some special guest storytellers coming in to share stories from their own cultures.
To support routine and consistency, each week will always tell a story, and we will usually have a cooking activity (or some other activity) to help bring the culture we are exploring to life.
I’m excited to be bringing this passion to the kids at Buddings, and hope you’ll join us for the journey!
