Exploring False Creek – Finding an island & gigantic birds!

On August, Friday the 8th, we went for a field trip to False Creek. Our special mission was to find a small hidden island and some really big birds around there. The first thing that caught our attention as soon as our field trip started was an old tunnel that helped us cross over a small stream. It had holes all over it and even under our feet so we could see the water running beneath us. It was pretty cool!
Right after we went through the tunnel we arrived at some pretty big rocks that we used as stairs to climb all the way up the hill. It was pretty tricky! Some of the kids were struggling to climb them but with a little bit of help from Jen and I, they did it and when we got all the way to the top of the hill we shouted “Yey, we did it!”.
We were really proud of the kids for trying so hard and managing to climb to the top of the hill!
Our big kids were pretty excited about what they saw at the top of the hill! It was a big water pipe that when you pushed a button, water started to fall down out of it and it split two ways down the hill. It was a pretty hot day so it was a fun way to cool off a little bit by touching the fresh water.
Heron and Asher spent lots of time playing with that water pipe. Every time they would run out of water Asher would climb up the hill and push the bottom again. Suddenly every one joined them. Right behind the water pipe we found a cool climbing playground. We were really excited!
There was so much to do but we were hungry and thirsty so we sat under a tree to have some granola muffins and oranges. Right after our snacks we went back to take a last look at the cool bridge and stare at the water to see if we could find any fish. We were having so much fun that we almost forgot to look for the big birds living on the island. So we packed our things and started searching.
When we arrived at the water we started throwing some rocks into the water. Raffael calls that “Kaboom!” A police officer then arrived and came to talk to us and he showed us how to throw rocks so they would go along way. That was very nice of him so we all thanked him for that.
On the island we saw lots of plants and different paths that we could follow. We had to decide which path was the best option as some of them were closed and hard to walk through. We saw a large piece of wood that we used as a bench and we all sat on it and talked about the beautiful view we had right in front of us. We used this opportunity to take lots of pictures.
After we had explored the island we decided it was time to go and look for the big birds. However on our way we saw all sorts of cool things such as colorful statues in the shape of people and spinning chairs. None of the kids wanted to leave but we promised them if we left we would see some big birds.
We did a little bit more of walking and we finally saw the big birds.Everyone was talking about how big they were and we took pictures with them and sung some songs about birds and animals. We were getting hungry again after so much walking so we ate some more snacks and then headed back to the bus stop.
We are so proud of our kids! They are such brave and determined explorers!
