Colourful Nature Walks
Last Monday was the first day of our Falling for Nature program, which is a new program happening Monday afternoons at Buddings. Equipped with magnifying glasses, collection jars, and colour charts, Jen, Denet and the kids walked to a park nearby and investigated all the natural wonders along the way.

Matching Colours in Nature
The kids found so many different things on their walk. From mushrooms, to different coloured leaves, to sticks and mossy rocks. We used all our senses – listening to the rustle of the crunchy leaves, smelling some flowers, feeling the rough rocks, and comparing different colours of things in our nature collection. There was no tasting except for our yummy snack. We played Colour Detectives, each of the kids was given a colour chart and asked to use their keen detective skills to find something in nature that matched one of the colours on their chart. There was a lot of enthusiastic hoots and hollers for this game “I found green!” and “This stick is matching!”

Discovering Nature Inside and Out
The teachers and kids love going outside. We hope to keep exploring the changing seasons each month with fieldtrips around the neighbourhood and down to Charleson Park. If your child is coming on Monday afternoons between 1-4pm, we ask that you bring them some clothes that are appropriate for an outdoor walk (rainboots, raincoats, and a change of clothes are all great ideas). That said, when the weather is really cold and rainy we will be exploring nature inside. In the upcoming weeks, the Falling for Nature program will be doing some inside nature investigations like dissecting a giant sunflower, planting seeds, and doing some nature rubbings. Here at Buddings, much of what we do is guided by the children’s questions and interests. This philosophy of education is called emergent curriculum and it allows us teachers to use the children’s own natural curiosity towards certain topics to determine what ideas we explore next. If teachers see that the kids are really into bugs, don’t be surprised if the next week we learn about insects through stories, hands-on explorations and art.
