Celebrate Diwali the Festival of Lights

October 21, 2014
Written by: Jen

This Wednesday in Big Kids Club, the kids and I will be learning about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. This is a colourful, joyous festival that seems like just the perfect thing to counter the shorter, darker days of fall.

What is Diwali?

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights celebrating light overcoming darkness, good overcoming evil. Traditionally, candles and lamps are lit in honor of Lakshmi, the goddess of happiness and good fortune.

Houses are cleaned and then decorated with flower garlands, paper chains, and good-luck doorstep designs made with coloured powders. Popular Diwali activities include playing card games, dressing up in special clothes and jewels, and exchanging boxes of sweets.

Diwali is a festival full of art!

At Buddings we are all about building on children’s interests. Back in the summer, we did some fun explorations where we made lanterns, lit candles and told stories. The children loved these activities and felt the candle light created a very special experience.

On Wednesday afternoons, the kids and I are wild about the arts! Let’s create something beautiful for a celebration! Join the festivities and bring in the light!

This Wednesday we will be using the arts to celebrate Diwali, making beautiful stained glass lanterns, paper chain decorations, and decorative jewelry.

Celebrating Cultures from Around the World

The families and teachers at Buddings all come from diverse backgrounds and we love learning about the traditions of cultures from around the world. Through stories, song and dance, food and the arts, we love to learn about cultures in our Big Kids Club programs. We love hearing your input, so if your family has a tradition you would like to share, or an theme you would love your child to explore, please email Jen at preschoolers@buddings.ca
