Munsch World: The Final Frontier
The veil of darkness is lifting over the world of Robert Munsch. Bit by bit, story by story, the Big Kids have helped to pick up the pieces of the hungry dark gobbling up shadows all over town. With only two classes left, the Big Kids will uncover what’s left of the dark and restore Munsch World to its former glory!
When we left off with Munsch World last month, the Big Kids were getting ready to head out on another adventure…
With a need for speed, we made our way to Self-Care Home Health Products for a tour of “the wheelchair store” at the end of February. The staff, led by the lovely Kelda Gavina, were incredibly warm and welcoming to our band of mini Munsch-lovers!
After trying out a fleet of wheelchairs on the main floor, we were led downstairs to take a ride on “the fastest wheelchair ever!”, a motorized behemoth that Lauretta, the main character in Robert Munsch’s Zoom!, would surely approve of. The kids (and teachers) took turns operating the chair under the watchful eye of Self-Care’s staff. Rollie, Sylvie, and Emily couldn’t get enough!
This goes down as one of my all-time favourite Big Kids Club field trips. Not only was it a great opportunity to shed some light on what it’s like to live with a physical disability, but it was flat-out fun for all!
Clang clang rattle bing bang gonna make my noise all day! Clang clang rattle bing bang gonna make my noise all day! So cries the sleepless Mortimer in the Robert Munsch classic of the same name.
No strangers to keeping their parents up at night, the Big Kids had a hoot bringing Mortimer’s story to life. With each re-telling, we added another layer of complexity to the tale. First came the oft-heard refrain, “MORTIMER, BE QUIET!” Then, came the chorus. Later we added actions: thumping up up up the stairs on tip toes, creaking open the door, shaking heads “yes”.
When the Big Kids had mastered these elements, we added a new concept: steady beat. We patted our knees, clapped our hands, and stomped our feet to the beat, clang clanging with Mortimer the entire time. After breaking for a snack, we set to work making shakers in order to really turn up the volume on our telling of the story.
Join us from 1-4pm on March 29th for an epic scavenger hunt in search of the last missing piece of the dark. No stone will be left unturned in the solving of our final Munschian mystery!
