The New School

Putting a tonne of work last year into the ultra-awesome Buddings Aquaponic Fish/Plan Life-Cycle device, we learned so much! About fish! And plants! And nitrogen cycles!

And then, at the end of the autumn, everything went wrong. Day after day, coming into the daycare, fish would turn up dead. Literally… Like, floating upside down, with deadness.

We tested the water here, we took samples to the fish store for more thorough testing, we isolated sick-looking fish… To no avail.

Finally, we learned how important it is to have the correct temperature in the tank. The thermostat on our heater had been tampered with, and the fish were cooking! For real… 🙁

By the time the dust settled, we were down to three lonely fish: One of the original Red Fin Tetras (from Mar. 2012), one of the Cherry Barbs, and the Long-Fin Ancistrus (both with us since Mar. 2013).

But it’s been a while, and now that we know what the problem was, we finally felt ready to rectify the situation. So on Sunday, Talia and Benson made the trip down to Aquariums West for helpful advice and a new crew of fishy friends.

The new schools of Neon Tetra and Tiger Barbs are swimming happily around in their appropriately temperate waters. And the older fish are happier, too! Check out the tank, in its new spot, next time you’re in!
